Heading to FILO 2026? Come Hang Out With SM Lights!
So, you’re looking at the calendar, and there it is: May 5-6, 2026. If you’ve spent any time in the world of church production, those dates probably mean one thing, you’re heading to South Barrington for the FILO Conference.
Honestly? We couldn’t be more excited.
If you’ve never been, FILO (which stands for First In, Last Out) is more than just a trade show or a technical training event. It’s a gathering of the tribe. It’s for the people who are there before the sun comes up to soundcheck the drums and still there long after the last person has left the lobby, wrapping cables and resetting the stage for next week.
At SM Lights, we live and breathe that "First In, Last Out" reality. That’s why we’re packing up the gear, loading the trailers, and heading to Willow Creek to hang out with you guys.
We’re Lighting People for Church People (Seriously)
Let’s be honest for a second: researching lighting can feel like learning a completely different language. You’ve got DMX addresses, refresh rates, CRI, color mixing... it’s a lot. And if you’re a technical director or a worship leader, you’re usually trying to figure all this out while also managing a team of volunteers, planning a rehearsal, and maybe even fixing a broken projector.
We get it.
The SM Lights team isn't just a group of guys in a warehouse. We’re actually the lighting arm of Shepherd Multimedia. We’ve spent the last 20+ years doing hands-on AVL (Audio, Video, Lighting) installations in churches just like yours. We’ve crawled through the attics, pulled the cable, and sat behind the consoles for thousands of services.
When we say we’re "lighting people for church people," we mean we only sell gear we’d actually trust in our own projects. We’ve seen what happens when a "bargain" light starts flickering on your livestream or when a complex console scares away your best volunteers. We aren't here to just sell you a box; we're here to make sure your Sunday morning goes off without a hitch.
The "FILO Grind" is Real
If you’ve ever found yourself sitting in a dark sanctuary at 11:00 PM on a Saturday night trying to get a moving head to stop twitching, you know the grind. The "First In, Last Out" lifestyle is a labor of love, but it can be exhausting.
That’s why the FILO Conference is such a breath of fresh air. It’s a chance to step away from the immediate pressure of the next service and reconnect with why we do this in the first place. It’s about excellence, yes: but it’s also about community.
We’re coming to FILO 2026 because we want to hear your stories. We want to know what’s working in your room, what’s driving you crazy, and how we can help make your job a little easier.
What We’re Bringing to the Show
We aren't coming empty-handed. We’re bringing some of our favorite "problem-solver" fixtures that were designed specifically for the unique needs of the modern church.
The Hero 400BSW: Your New Best Friend
If you’ve been looking for a fixture that can do it all, you need to see the Hero 400BSW.

This thing is a workhorse. It’s a hybrid fixture, which is industry-speak for "it has multiple superpowers."
- Beam: For those sharp, punchy shafts of light that look great in a haze-filled room.
- Spot: For projecting patterns (gobos) onto your back wall or stage floor.
- Wash: For filling the stage with smooth, even color.
In plain English? Instead of buying three different lights, you buy one that handles all three roles. It’s perfect for churches that need to maximize their budget without sacrificing that "big room" look.
The LS-1: Control That Doesn’t Require a PhD
We know the struggle: you have a powerful lighting rig, but only one person in the building knows how to run it. If that person gets sick or goes on vacation, the lighting stays on "all white" for three weeks.
That’s where the Light Shark LS-1 comes in.

The LS-1 is a professional DMX control surface that connects to a tablet or computer. It gives you the physical faders you need for hands-on control, but the software is incredibly intuitive. It’s volunteer-friendly, meaning you can actually train someone to run a great-looking service in a fraction of the time it takes on a traditional high-end console.
Why "Flicker-Free" Actually Matters
Here’s a reality check: a light can look great to your eyes in the room, but look absolutely terrible on your livestream.
If you’ve ever seen horizontal lines "rolling" across your video feed, or if your worship leader’s face looks like it’s vibrating on screen, you’re dealing with flicker. This happens because many LED lights "pulse" at a frequency that doesn't play nice with camera shutters.
At SM Lights, our fixtures: like our front wash and facial clarity lights: are optimized for high-definition broadcast. We use high-frequency dimming so your livestream looks as crisp and professional as the experience in the room. In an era where your "front door" is often a YouTube link, this isn't just a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Let’s Talk Shop (Or Just Talk)
The best part of FILO isn't the gear: it's the people.
When you stop by the SM Lights booth, you won’t find a pushy salesperson. You’ll find people who have been exactly where you are. Want to talk about how to get better skin tones on your livestream? We’re in. Want to vent about how hard it is to get power to your electrics? We’ve been there.
We offer real, US-based human support from professionals with over 17 years of experience. We don’t just ship you a box and wish you luck. We’re here to help you design the plot, program the looks, and troubleshoot the "why isn't this working?" moments.
A Few Things to Check Out While You’re There:
- The "Volunteer Test": Come put your hands on our DMX control systems. See how quickly you can build a look.
- Facial Clarity: See how our wash lights handle different skin tones without making everyone look "washed out" or orange.
- The Hero Series: Watch our moving lights in action and see how smooth the pan and tilt really are.
Are You Ready for May?
Whether you’re a seasoned pro who has been to every FILO since the beginning, or a volunteer who just got "voluntold" they were in charge of lighting three weeks ago, we want to meet you.
FILO 2026 is going to be an incredible time of learning, growth, and probably a little too much caffeine. But most importantly, it’s a reminder that you’re not doing this alone. There’s a whole community of "First In, Last Out" people right there with you.
Plan to stop by and see us! We’ll be the ones with the vibrant green accents and the lights that don’t flicker.
If you can’t wait until May to start upgrading your room, you can always check out our full lineup here or reach out to us directly. We’d love to help you prep for your next big event long before we ever get to Chicago.
See you at Willow Creek!
