Old Leko vs. New LED: Keep It, Retrofit It, or Replace It?
Honestly? Every church asks the same question before spending money on new fixtures: “Do we really have to replace everything?” Usually the answer is no. If you’re running tungsten Lekos today, you have three paths, and the right one depends on the shape your current fixtures are in.
Let’s break it down.
Option 1: Keep the tungsten Leko
The classic Leko, like the ETC Source Four, is a workhorse: a 575W or 750W lamp, a solid die-cast body, and sharp shutter cuts. It also comes with tradeoffs:
- One color of white, around 3,200K. Changing color means gel, and the light shifts warmer as it dims.
- Every fixture needs a dimmer channel behind it.
- Lamps burn out and have to be replaced.
- 575 to 750 watts per fixture, much of it ending up as heat in the room.
Option 2: Retrofit with the Reborn 200T
The Reborn 200T puts a new LED engine into the ETC Source Four body you already own.
- 200W LED source, in place of a 575W or 750W lamp
- Tunable white from 2,200K to 7,000K
- CRI 94, TLCI 96
- 2/5 DMX channel modes with RDM support
- 3 kg, built to fit ETC Source Four 575/750 housings
- Includes power cable, fix bolt, safety cable, and user manual
The Reborn 200T is listed at $570.
Option 3: Replace with the S300T Profile
The Profile S300T is a purpose-built LED profile fixture, a new Leko from the ground up.
- 300W tunable white, 2,800K to 6,500K
- CRI 97, R9 ≥ 90, TLCI up to 98
- DMX/RDM compatible
- Four shutter blades for beam control
- Flicker-free dimming with selectable PWM frequencies
- 8.6 kg aluminum housing
- Includes power cable, safety cable, gel frame, and user manual
The Profile series is offered with fixed 19°, 26°, 36°, and 50° lens options. The S300T is $1,379.
Do the math
At listed prices, the retrofit is $809 less per fixture than a full replacement. Across six fixtures, that’s $3,420 for retrofits against $8,274 for new profiles, a difference of $4,854. Either way, you go from one fixed warm white to tunable white controlled from your console.
Need color instead of tunable white? Both paths have a color version: the Reborn 1000C (RGBV) retrofit at $675 and the Profile S350C (RGBALC) at $1,628.
Which option makes sense for you
- Retrofit with the Reborn 200T if your ETC Source Four bodies are in good shape and only the light source is dated. You get the widest tuning range of the three at less than half the price of a new fixture.
- Replace with the S300T Profile if your fixtures are worn, aren’t Source Fours, or you’re adding positions you don’t have today. You get a 300W engine and the highest color fidelity of the three.
- Keep what you have for now if your fixtures are working and the budget isn’t there yet. Just plan the upgrade before the next round of lamp replacements.
Real talk: the Reborn is built for ETC Source Four 575/750 housings. If your Lekos are a different make, or you’re not sure how your dimmer circuits would handle LED, ask us before you order.
The bottom line: upgrading to LED doesn’t have to mean replacing every fixture in the room. Reach out through smlights.com and we’ll walk through which path fits the gear you already own.
